Who and What Were Some of the Biggest Influences on Fashion in 2017?
One of the things that surprised all fashion reporters in 2017 was the trend towards younger women wanting to wear more traditional ‘older’ clothes.
This was said to be a reaction to the mismatched hipster fashions and the athleisure trend of 2014.
Business and Professional
This trend was seen in plaid skirts, billowing white blouses, black stockings, bias cut midi skirts, as well as, pale blue belted trench coats and Argyle sweaters.
Add to these, silk blouses, sensible flat shoes and sandals, straight leg jeans, long powder blue coats worn with matching pillbox hats, and you would be forgiven for thinking you had stepped back into the 60s.
Echoes from Old Politicians
Paisley in reds and blues also made a comeback and coat styles reflected the Nehru jacket, which was a hip-length tailored coat for men or women, with a mandarin collar modelled on the Indian achkan and made popular by Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India from 1947 to 1964.
Nehru wasn’t the only past politician to influence fashion with bows similar to those worn by Margaret Thatcher being added into the mix.
Celebs Leading the Way
Due to an increase in demand for women to appear more business-like baggy black capri pants became popular in response to the increasingly sexualized and misogynistic dress codes in many workplaces.
Famous celebs who carried this off nicely were Kate Middleton, Victoria Beckham and Melania Trump.
As fashionistas strived for a more professional look, fashions which took a nose dive in popularity were skinny jeans, chokers, ripped jeans and pin badges.
